有關中元節的傳說很多,臺灣民間,農曆七月是「鬼月」。閻羅王於每年農曆七月初一打開鬼門關,稱「開鬼門」,冥府的地獄門將開啟,放出一批無人奉祀的孤魂野鬼到陽間來享受人們的供祭。直到七月三十才「關鬼門」。所以七月又稱鬼月。據說,在這段期間,幽冥界的孤魂野鬼都爭先恐後地來人間逍遙,找些好吃好喝的。尤其在七月十五日--中元節,是鬼門大開日,一般認為這天最好別出門,以免撞鬼,更不能到河邊,免得不慎失足成了水鬼的替身。
從有關中元節的傳說中,可深切體認到中元節的祭祀具有雙重的意義在,一是闡揚懷念祖先的孝道,一是發揚推已及人,樂善好施的義舉。這全是從慈悲的角度出發,很有人情味。所以,我們在慶贊中元的同時,應該跳脫鬼的角度,期勉互愛。
