For nearly half a century, flood-control policy and a building ban kept development on Shezi Island, Taipei, at a standstill. As plans to lift the ban and redevelop the island drew attention, real estate agents saw an opportunity, and land-for-sale signs began to appear everywhere, from the main roads to the narrow lanes. Bright billboards hung on old houses, factory walls and empty lots, in sharp contrast to the farmland, sheet-metal buildings and traditional homes around them. These photographs record that moment before the island's transformation, when land long treated as a family home also became a market commodity. Taken in 2015 and 2020.
